Is working with family a good idea? That was the thought-provoking question put to me recently by Cathy Anderson, Senior News Editor at LinkedIn News Australia in recognition of National Family Business Day. Cathy was eager to explore the dynamics of family businesses and how they differ from the dramatic portrayals we often see on TV – think ‘Succession’.
First of all, who knew there was a day dedicated to something that holds such a special place in my heart? Working alongside my father in our business Blesbok Enterprises for the past 15 years has been an incredible journey. It’s been like an ongoing, real-time MBA, with my father serving as my greatest mentor. Every day, I absorb his big-picture thinking, customer-centric approach, and his ability to keep his cool when faced with challenges.
The greatest compliment I receive is when someone tells me, “That sounds just like something your father would say!” Our compatible temperaments and complementary skills have ensured a seamless collaboration. In all these years, we’ve never had a cross word or disagreement.
Outside of work, we share precious moments – from weekend walks in the park to family dinners and outings to our favourite quiet restaurants. Our conversations are a whirlwind, switching effortlessly between work and a myriad of other topics, leaving others in awe. I’m grateful to my mother for masterminding my entry into the business years ago and to my husband and daughters, who patiently become audience to our perpetual business discussions.
While we may not be in the “Succession” stratosphere (thankfully!), we find fulfilment in running a business together with a collaborative, positive, and supportive culture. We embrace synergy, harmonious temperaments, distinct skills, respect for one another and a clear focus on shared goals and objectives.
